"I love daisies. They're so friendly. Don't you think daisies are the friendliest flower?" - Meg Ryan, You've Got Mail
Dr. Sam DuFlo spent her life’s work facilitating birth. Having founded a multimillion dollar women’s health practice, she emphasized designing and creating a space that was innovative, welcoming, bucked the trends, and catered to the five senses to propagate healing.
In tandem, Sam dreamed of and created a home that welcomed her with cheerful daisies at the front door, that had faerie gardens for her daughter and sculptural, functional foliage throughout the year. A lifelong learner and student of botany, horticulture, and ornithology, Sam paired her love for the dirt and skills for outdoor living and design to found Frida & Bird in Baltimore, MD. Merging her exceptional knowledge, award winning design and styling skills, business acumen and love of outdoor living, Frida & Bird, an outdoor living and landscape design studio focuses on legacy, memories, regeneration, and her client’s functional and emotional needs and desires. Stepping away from clinical practice to lean towards the sun, Sam is the primary designer and landscaper at Frida and Bird
When Sam isn't in the dirt, she's in her woodshop woodworking, furniture refinishing, upholstery, and creating art, distance running, and being a Mama. Sam has been featured in a plethora of national media, podcasts, and been awarded several Lifetime Achievement Awards, and Top 100 Women of Maryland Award.
Say hello to our namesake, Frida. Frida grew up in Nicaragua, learning the art of digging holes and sunbathing. Frida enjoys birdwatching, hot days, and long naps. Not so great at picking trees and shrubs, Frida stays home for greenhouse visits.
Say hello to Bird. Bird comes to most site visits and planting days, and is actively in training as a therapy dog. Pro at the hose, ornithology, and early wake ups.
The initial client interview process is to determine if we are a good fit to work together on your home project. The initial consultation includes a preview walk through, needs assessment, a think tank of what intrigues or draws you, any inspiration you have, as well as how you want your space to make you feel. We look at the choreography of the space: how you want to move through it, the flow and pattern of people, pets, and wildlife, how it transitions to your indoor living space. We also address maintenance needs, timeline, and your current landscape or lack thereof. This part of the process also goes through basic costs for design, how we work, and the expectations of you as a client and us as your chosen designer and landscaper.
The second phase involves measuring, soil, light and other assessments to begin developing your mood board and design preview. We create a timeline together that meets your needs, which may involve hiring other subcontractors such as hardscaping, fencing, drainage, if necessary.
Once this is completed, a two to three phase design presentation is involved, ensuring we match how you want to feel in your outdoor space as well as your budget.
Our process involves five phases, ensuring we add viability to your life and your home by creating an outdoor escape, regardless of where your home is. Whether you would like to cater to kids and pets, outdoor entertainment, or attract wildlife and songbirds, we promise a unique approach to add value and legacy to your outdoor living experience.
You've purchased a home with an existing garden, or have a garden that is overgrown and needs some love- you are in the right place. Our knowledge allows us to trim and propagate, perform cuttings based on plant and season, to allow your garden to flourish without you having to spend hours in the dirt or hire someone to merely chop it all carelessly back. Please contact us for hourly rates or seasonal rates for routine care.
Understanding how wildlife moves, flows and grows through your outdoor space can be a fulfilling addition to your home. With an expertise in pollinators and songbird attraction, there are easy ways we can implement drawing your colorful friends to your garden space. Other things we consider are the presence of wildlife such as deer and fox, plants that are deer resistant and non-invasive, and your own "wildlife" such as pets that interact within the outdoor space.
Rooftop terraces, carports, decks, fence entries, patios, firepits, front entryways or stoops: whether you are in the city with limited space and want to jazz up the concrete jungle or in the county and would like some year round interest, planter gardens can be magical. We help select an arrangement of planters, plants that flower or create year round foliage, hide unsightly garbage cans, and more. Adding greenery will create an inviting space for entertaining, a quiet and restorative space for your morning coffee, as well as help lead the eye to prominent architectural or interest points you'd like focused on. Planter gardens can be easy to maintain, train to your living space, and a cost effective way to elevate your space to luxory.
Frida & Bird will work with you to design and curate an outdoor space to meet your emotional and functional needs. Depending on project size, it can be anticipated that in larger scale projects involving poured concrete, mature trees, severe irrigation issues, or outbuildings, other contractors may be used. These may include tree trimming services for larger trees, stone masons, concrete workers, sprinkler system install, and so forth. F & B Co will work with coordinating the contractors of your choice and providing estimates. As we provide outdoor design, the design and build of any outbuildings, additions, sun porches, or structures would be performed separately under the guidance of an interior designer and contractor. We have several local partners that we strongly recommend and have worked with closely before,. As we evaluate your project we will provide recommendations upon request.
Frida & Bird uses an innovative process to assess client’s needs and desires, from what they want to feel in their outdoor space, how they want to utilize it to maximize function (kids, dining, dogs), client goals, maintenance requirements and budget. A curation of experience, memories, legacy and envelopment in outdoor space is more than planting trees in the ground: it's how you feel in your space.
